2019 Quartet Night Results

Tuesday 19 November saw the crowds gathering for the annual ‘Wayfarers Chorus Quartet Night’, a friendly competition between chorus members.

This year, there were 7 quartets competing for bragging rights and a bottle of wine, with a couple of the newer members taking part. Before the contest started, the MD (Colin Wayte) took the chorus members through a warm-up routine and the chorus then sang the ever popular ‘Mary-Lou’, before making way for the quartets.

A total of 18 members took part in the contest, some members singing in more than one quartet. It was good to see Colin Wayte taking the opportunity to show his skills as a tenor, along with a couple of the newer members.

Judging this year was provided by Allan and Jean Whiteley. Allan and Jean are well known in the area, both being members of various music related groups and Allan also playing the organ at Birkdale URC. In addition to providing an enthusiastic audience, their summing up was entertaining, constructive and encouraging.

Following tradition, once all the quartets had sung, the chorus performed a selection from their repertoire while the judges finalised their decision.

The winning songs were ‘Under The Boardwalk’ and ‘The Longest Time’, sung by ‘Impulse’. The result saw a return to the familiar top step for Garry. This is the fourth year in succession that Garry has been the lead voice part in the winning quartet, a pattern that the other leads in the chorus need to try to stop next year!

Commiserations go to ‘Foremost’ and ‘New Yorkers’, who came second and third respectively. Better luck next year.
